SOUTH DOWNS 2-HOUR STARGAZING EXPERIENCE
Enjoy an amazing adventure out among the stars from the South Downs National Park. We'll meet you at one of our stargazing locations at Bignor Hill nr Petworth, Devils Dyke nr Brighton or Butser Hill nr Petersfield for a private 2-hour stargazing experience. Our experienced astronomer will likely start with a laser-guided tour of the stars and constellations that we can see from the South Downs. You'll then get to use one of our big portable telescopes to explore the night sky. Along the way you'll see star systems, star clusters, nebulae and even distant galaxies far beyond our own. If the moon is in the sky then you'll be able to visit the lunar surface and see hundreds of craters in incredible detail with your own eyes. Planets too are visible at certain times of the year. If you've always wanted to see Saturn close up in a big telescope, or get a glimpse of Jupiter's amazing banded atmosphere, our 2-hour South Downs stargazing experience gives you the perfect opportunity!

The stargazing experience gift box is professionally crafted to make for a lovely present for a family member or friend. Inside the gift box they'll find a professionally printed stargazing voucher with details about the stargazing experience and how to use the voucher. The South Downs stargazing experience is suitable for individuals, couples, families and small groups. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Voucher recipient may have up to 15 friends and family members share in the experience at no extra charge.
When can the voucher be used?
The voucher recipient can choose a week night or weekend night for their stargazing experience any time of the year. The only times we do not run are 24 - 31 December, and when our astronomer is already booked.
What if it is raining or cloudy?
Naturally cloud and rain is always a threat. When using the voucher to book the stargazing experience we recommend that you choose 2 or 3 nights initially on which you’d be happy for us to run the experience. If it is cloudy / raining on all selected nights then we’ll simply roll the experience forward to an alternative date that works. We can keep rolling the experience forward until we are able to run the stargazing for you.
A really great treat in our garden from Seb who provided us with a thrilling tour of the night sky, supported by very informative narration. 2 hrs went by really quickly.
I was bought this as a birthday gift and it was amazing! Seb was great at getting a suitable slot arranged and Nick who was our guide to the night sky was fantastically knowledgable and enthusiastic. The views through the telescope of the Orion nebula and various star clusters were pretty amazing too.

I was bought this experience as a gift before the pandemic and Seb was so helpful and kept our voucher open until we could use it. Nick was our guide on the night and we found him to be friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The views through the telescope are breathtaking. He didn't mind keep readjusting the telescope so that you could all have a good look at the night sky. Extremely well given tour of the night sky by Nick who was incredibly entertaining, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We explored constellations, binary star systems, planets, star clusters and the life cycle of stars.
Seeing the rings of Saturn and the bands of Jupiter were a particular highlight.
There was also a fascinating historical element with how the night sky was used by ancient cultures.
We would highly recommend, we can't wait to go again.

Last night (18/01/2023) Nick took us on a guided tour of the night sky. The experience was amazing. Nick was full of knowledge and left none of our questions unanswered. His passion is very obvious and infectious. Certainly an evening we won't forget!
What a wonderful night, the 2 hours flew by even though we were in freezing temperatures with numb toes! Seb was great at keeping us informed of the weather to ensure we stood the best chance of clear skies and Nick is clearly passionate about what he does, he was so engaging and friendly. it was astounding looking through the telescope but learning about what we were looking at was just as interesting. I can't recommend this experience enough if you want to learn more about star constellations, the difference between young and old stars and just a gentle reminder of how tiny we really are! Thank you so much Seb and Nick :)
We had a great night yesterday with our celestial guide Nick. The two hours whizzed by as he extremely knowledgeably and entertainingly described the main features on view with the aid of his telescope. We all learnt a lot.

Just had a fantastic time looking at the stars and planets from Butser Hill around midnight in June (5/6/23).
Nick was very informative about what we could see and answered all our questions. Thank you Nick for making the whole stargazing experience special and thank you Seb for organising the experience and ensuring we had clear skies.

Nick was our guide for a tour of the night sky. He was funny, professional and so incredibly knowledgeable! Both Nick and Seb were accommodating in finding an appropriate location for our group as we had a wheelchair user (who didn't come in the end, but it was no trouble for them).
The 2 hours flew by. We were able to see Saturn and its rings, Jupiter, clusters of stars, binary stars and the life cycle of stars and much more. Nick was quick at locating these and giving us excellent and informative narration behind each of them.
Would definitely recommend and we will be using these guys again some day!
Can i just say, wow! What an experience i had last night! Nick was incredible! So imformative and explained everything so well and in a way the average person can understand it! The night ran so smoothly from the moment we met him, and the sky stayed so clear.
